After we got back from Michigan I began the act of getting everything back to normal from sleeping, eating, and for some of the kids back to the showering world!!! My baby Sam met me with the best welcome ever, he probably thought I had gone away forever!!! Just as things were getting back to normal the bullet hit and my baby Sam got sick really quick. I noticed he wasn't acting like himself on sunday when I got home from church so on monday morning I took him over to the vets office. By the time I got there he was having trouble walking, his paw was curling up and he was walking on a "fist". The vet did a very quick examination and determined it was pancrientitous, gave him two shots. One was an antibiotic and the other was to help him with his vomiting as he was unable to eat and even keep water down. I was sent home with a box of pills to give to him on tuesday and wendsday. By the time we went up to bed monday night Sam was not able to walk on his own he would just stumble around, we were even having to give him his liquids by a syringe because he couldn't drink on his own. I held my baby and tried to comfort him with every cry of pain that he went through. At 4:48am on tuesday august 19th Sam took his last breath. I have never felt so alone even though I had Kevin with me, Sam had been with me for the past 8 years. Kevin and I cried together until he had to get up and go to work at 5. I spent most of my day crying, the worst moment was when I went to go downstairs and as I walked out of the bedroom I turned around because I forgot Sam. I broke down. When Kevin got home from work he measured the hole under a tree in the back yard that the kids had gone out and and dug earlier that day and built him a wooden box. We placed some pillows that Sam liked to sleep on in the box and laid Sam on them covering him up with his fleece blanket that he liked to sleep with. We lowered him into the grave and Jonathan said the "eulogy". He said that Sam was a good dog that when he was told to do something he would do it, he was a smart dog. I still have my "Sam moments" and will probably have them for a long time. The kids have had the moments as well, like when they have food that falls on the floor. I love my baby very much and will miss him terribly.

I am so sorry about the loss of Sam. I can empathize a little. Two years ago we lost our dog, Maverick. We still miss her.
I know you will miss him for a long time. I still think of Ebony (a dog we had that died when Amy was a little baby).
I'm so sorry Susannah. I remember when you first got Sam (was it really that long ago???) and you were so excited about it. We haven't ever had any dogs or cats to be attached to. Taylor mourns deeply everytime a fish or hermit crab dies, I can't imagine how it'd be with a larger pet that really is more like a member of the family. Although our hamster may end up being that way. He's little but everyone just loves him to pieces. It's never easy. I hope that you are coping okay now.
Thanks to all of you, he was special and I am still sad but each day will hopefully make the pain and sadness go away.
