Well the report cards are not in as of yet but there is this thing that they have so that the parents and the students can check their grades to see how everything is going.
Well I am pleased to say that when Adrian and I checked his grades last week he had strait A's!!!!! As
yesterday he has dropped to having all A's and 1 B!! That is still very good. Last year Adrian had a hard time with his grades and was failing at least half of his classes at any given time. After daily tutorials with his teachers he was able to bring some up but still ended the year with some bad grades. Last year started off with bad grades and I think he was never able to catch up on the info in the classes to obtain the better grades as the year progressed. This year he has started off so well! I am very proud of him and what's even better, I think that he is proud of himself!!! Good job baby boy!
Last year Ashley ended the year having all A's and B's!! She was very proud of herself as well as Kevin and myself. She studied hard and put her mind to it!
Allot of the "putting her mind to it" attitude that she had last year was because she had gotten into trouble so much. For the most part of the second half of the year she was grounded and had nothing else to do but study. So far this year all I have heard on things is that she was doing good, understanding everything, asking questions, and so on. Ashley was begged for almost two weeks to bring home the paper that would have her info on it so that we could check out her grades, she conveniently forgot everyday up until yesterday when David reminded her constantly. When she came home I asked for it and she went from being all smiles to having an upset look on her face and was reluctant to get the paper. When she was walking into Dad's room to bring up the website on his computer she made the comment, " Why do I need to bring it up, I already know I have bad grades." WHAT??? She has known that she has had bad grades and has not taken any action to correct it, ask questions, do tutorials, anything!!
I went into the room still trying to tell myself that maybe she is just saying she has bad grades because they were not all A's like Adrian. When I got the the computer she was sitting in front of it with her head in her hands. I asked her to move so that I could sit down and we could go over each class. The first grade on it was a 99, very good!! The second class listed was seminary and that doesn't give a grade so I moved on to the next, and there it was, a 62! The class is Mrs.
Farnsworth's English class. The way that I do grades is anything that is bad (a c or below) I ask about it as to why it is what it is, did they not understand or what happened. I do also commend them on all the good grades because they worked hard to get it and I like to praise them on good things done!! I asked Ashley about each grade listed in
English and got the same excuses, " I don't know what that assignment is" and "I don't
remember doing anything like that" Well, I sent an email to Mrs.
Farnsworth to set up a time that Ashley and I can go and talk to her so that way we can all be in the same boat on Ashley's education. Ashley cried when I did this and even more tears came when I told her that she would be at the meeting and would tell her teacher what she told me.
Moving on after the email was sent to the next class listed and I find a grade of a 57!! This class happens to be biology. Once again I got the same excuses as before with an added one being, "I don't remember the words"
OK, I admit that some of the words are hard to remember but if you study it should eliminate that problem or at least be
beneficial. Well, I again wrote an email to the teach er of this class and once again she cried.
I was very
disappointed in these grades and I told her so. I explained to her several times that I know that she can do better, she showed us that last year. I asked her if we needed to minimise the time that she is allowed to watch
TV, play games, get on the computer,
etc. or what her
opinion is on it. Her response was to just take her out of public school and home school her! I explained to her that if that was done then the person (me) that is talking to her about the grades would then be the one that would be
in charge of giving the grade and that I would not take anything less than perfection. I shouldn't have used that word perfection. rather I should have said I wouldn't take anything less than her best, that's my mistake that I will have to fix.
Anyways, the grades were nit great, these are just the worst of them. She had two A's. 1 B, and 3 F's. I asked her if she had put forth all the effort that she could and had asked all the questions she didn't know the answer to, her response was "well I guess not." She was angry when we finished in Dad's room because I told her that I was going to ask that the teachers give me a heads up when there is tests so that for a week previous he and I can study for them as well as I want to check her homework everyday. She thinks that is like treating her like a baby but the way that I see it, I gave her the chance to have me there and put it on herself to ask questions if she had any rather than hover over her shoulder. This is the way that I can make sure that she is understanding her assignments.
I asked her what she had for homework and then told her to get started on it, she tried to go upstairs to her room to do it. I told her that she needed to work at the table downstairs and that sent the tears going again accompanied by a lovely whine of, "I don't want to do my work down here, I just want to be in my room!" I don't think that I was wrong to say that she had to stay down at the table but she does, any opinions???
Well the night ended with her still mad at me as I went over her homework papers, correcting her on anything that was incorrect and explaining how a small mistake such as a word left out of a
definition that she wrote down could cause her to miss a question on a test because she will have studied it the way she had written it but the test will have the correct wording. I don't know if she heard what I said, but I can only say the words, it is up to her to listen to them. Hopefully we can get her head back into school and maybe she will find that she wants to get the grades to be proud of herself and her accomplishments! If anyone has any advise, please give it!
